Fire Door Safety Week Success

2020 heralded Lorient’s most successful programme of events for Fire Door Safety Week (FDSW) to date. FDSW is an annual campaign run by the British Woodworking Federation; and is designed to increase public understanding of the role that fire doors play in protecting life and property.

Lorient designs and manufactures a wide range of high performance door seals for fire and smoke containment. Our intumescent strips form a vital part of a fire door assembly, helping to defend buildings against the spread of fire. Our smoke seals restrict smoke movement around a building - giving people time to escape, and reduce property damage.

EDUCATION IS KEY

Throughout FDSW Lorient broadcasted a number of educational webinars about fire safety, sealing systems and the importance of correctly specified, installed & maintained fire doors. Our expert speakers imparted their technical knowledge to over 500 registrants across the week. Many tuned in to witness a sealed versus unsealed live fire door test. The footage captures the significant difference in fire resistance between the two doors & the crucial role played by fire doors in saving lives and protecting property.

MAKING FIRE DOORS A PRIORITY

The official FDSW campaign released some startling research into the state of fire door maintenance, inspection and replacement programmes across local authority owned and managed housing in the UK – see below. The British Woodworking Federation stated:

“It’s clear COVID-19 has understandably impacted on service delivery across a variety of sectors, but fires don’t stop. With the UK lockdown period forcing many people to spend more time at home, people without fit for purpose fire doors have been put at risk. There is a need for continued and urgent focus on ensuring the safety of all building occupants whether in local authority or privately-rented accommodation, workplaces or other building types.

"When it comes to fire door inspections, fire doors can become damaged at any time, especially where they are frequently used. If a damaged door goes unidentified it cannot perform its life-saving role. Like previous years, this year’s Fire Door Safety Week campaign will emphasise the importance of regular inspections, carried out by trained and competent professionals."
