Effective smoke & fire containment is essential for saving lives and preserving property - and in multiple occupancy dwellings (such as apartments, nursing homes, halls of residence and hotels) this places a particular burden of responsibility on building owners.
However, since the amendments to Approved Document E to the Building Regulations (England & Wales) came into force on 1 July 2003, there are additional requirements in these properties for effective acoustic containment too.
Regulation E1 covers “dwelling-houses, flats and rooms for residential purposes”, and for the first time, Approved Document E goes on to give specific acoustic performance requirements for door assemblies - a minimum of 29dB Rw.
Given that many doors will be used as apartment front doors too, some security features may also be needed - such as door viewers, letterplates and locks and latches. As these doors are likely to be fire resisting, it is essential to ensure that installing these features does not compromise the acoustic, smoke and fire performance of the door assembly.
To meet all the requirements efficiently and cost-effectively, an integrated approach in essential - and the Lorient sealing systems recommended in this section have been designed with all this in mind.
The following pages give options for:
Options are given for single and double leaf doors (single swing).
These are our typical recommended solutions, to cover the majority of installations. However, Lorient has a vast library of test evidence, and there are plenty of alternative solutions we could suggest! Please do feel free to call our Technical Helpline if you would like any further details, or would like to discuss your specific application in more depth.
We would always advise you to check the fire door manufacturer's test evidence to ensure the correct sizes of fireseals are used.
Don't forget our range of intumescent dampers/air transfer grilles too - suitable for door, wall, duct, floor and ceiling applications.

A typical fire-rated or non-fire rated door construction is highly unlikely to enable higher levels of acoustic performance to be achieved. A high performance acoustic door construction will be required. (You may find our FAQ on achieving high acoustic performance ratings helpful.) Please note, to achieve acoustic performance on any door as...

These solutions are suitable for non-fire rated doors, required to also provide an acoustic performance of at least 29dB Rw. Please note, to achieve acoustic performance on any door assembly, it is always essential to seal the threshold. (You may find our FAQ on threshold sealing helpful.) Single leaf, single swing doors Perimeter sea...

Many older fire-rated doors may require upgrading to meet today's acoustic and smoke containment requirements. For multiple occupancy dwellings (including hotels, guest houses, nursing homes, etc) the new RRO (Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order), effective from 1 October 2006, places the responsibility on building owners to ensure the fire r...
